Abigail Garza, a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas - Conservatory of Music, made it to the blind auditions of the Voice of the China last August 14.
In an interview, Garza said that she was personally contacted by the producer Tian Ming to audition for the blind auditions after seeing her Youtube account where she usually posted song covers. Garza said that if it wasn’t for her friends she wouldn’t have known that the producer contacted her because she wasn’t able to see his message.
Before the auditions she felt terrified and thought that she couldn’t make it since there were hundreds of others who also auditioned. To her surprise in the blind auditions, where she sang “I Surrender” by Celine Dion, The Voice CH judge and famous Chinese singer Jay Chou turned his chair around, making her a part of Team Jay Chou. Chou said that he was really impressed with the brilliance of her high notes. “It was really great how she can control it really well,” Chou added.
During the Knockout Round, she battled against Sharon Kwan and they sang Mulan’s “Reflection.” Coaches Harleng and Feng both favoured Kwan, while Coach Ying favoured for Garza, which unfortunately knocked Garza out of the competition.
Although Garza failed to qualify further, said that she was happy that out of the 3 million who joined and the 150 who went to the blind audition, she was able to get Jay Chou to turn his chair around. Moreover she said, “I am Filipina, who got in the most popular TV show in China!”
Garza also auditioned for the Voice of the Philippines but failed to qualify, she said that she now plans go back to the classics. Garza was also a member of Mediartrix, a university wide multimedia arts and theatre organization of UST, where she became a musical director for some school plays.
