Senators Grace Poe and Francis “Chiz” Escudero officially announced that they will be teaming up as President and Vice President for the upcoming 2016 elections.
Yesterday, Sen. Poe declared her presidential bid for next year’s national elections at the University of the Philippines Bahay ng Alumni in Diliman, Quezon City while Sen. Escudero delivered an acceptance speech as Poe’s running mate at the Club Filipino, Greenhills earlier today.
In the closing remarks of her speech Sen. Poe revealed her intention to run for president by declaring, “I am Grace Poe. A Filipino. A daughter, wife and mother. And with God’s grace, I offer myself for the country’s highest calling as your President.”
In a speech delivered in Filipino, she outlined her 20 platforms to address not only the country’s economic, cultural and social status, but also issues such as corruption, education, agriculture, tax reforms, labor, human rights, and the territorial dispute with China. Sen. Poe also pushed for more transparency in the government by having the Freedom of Information Bill passed as soon as possible.
While she praised the Aquino administration throughout most of her speech, Sen. Poe jabbed at the administration’s ‘Daang Matuwid’ reform program as she touched on the issue of corruption. “No one man or group holds a monopoly on ‘daang matuwid.’ President Aquino has done much to curb corruption and I am thankful that it has restored the people’s faith in an honest leader,” she said.
Sen. Poe intends to continue what her father, the late Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ), started when he ran for president in 2004. “When I first asked for your help, I said that I wanted to continue what my father FPJ had started,” she said.
Having been recently vocal about running with Sen. Poe for running in the upcoming elections in the same party list, Sen. Escudero pledged his support for Sen. Poe as her running mate.
“I am Chiz Escudero, a Filipino, a son, a husband, a father … I humbly offer myself to the mission of serving as your vice president,” said Sen. Escudero in his acceptance speech.
“I once said I would support any decision that Senator Grace makes regarding her role in the 2016 elections. As a candidate or ordinary supporter, I’m prepared to stand by her, just as I did for FPJ over 11 years ago,” Escudero added.
At this point, the Poe-Escudero is the only completed tandem in the run for the 2016 elections. The Millennial Post
