The Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles sweeped off the National University (NU) Bulldogs earning a 74-70 in a double overtime last Wednesday in the 78th University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Kiefer Ravena brought the Eagles with 21 points alongside Chibueze Ikeh with 14 points who took over in the last extra period.
Jerry Pingoy’s free throws saved the Eagles, pulling to a 55-54, in favor of NU.
Ravena missed his first nine shots from the long range but his lone triple tied the game at 57 before the buzzer and forced overtime. He finished with 21 points despite going 7-of-26 from the field.
The absence of Bulldogs Alfred Aroga and Kyle Neypes was felt during the two overtimes after the two fouled late in the fourth quarter, leaving the squad vulnerable to Ateneo’s 6-foot-8 center Ikeh.
The game went on 57-54, in favor of the Bulldogs, but Gelo Alolino lost the ball letting Ravena hit a 3-pointer that sent the game to overtime.
The second OT led the Blue Eagles ahead in a 68-64 after a reverse layup by Von Pessumal who tallied 8 points throughout the game and free throws by Ikeh in the last seconds.
The game put Ateneo in level with the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and University of the East Red Warriors with a record of 2-1, while the Bulldogs dropped to a 0-3.
Alolino led the Bulldogs with 19 points while Alfred Aloga totaled 14 points.
The game marked the first victory of the Ateneo Blue Eagles against the NU Bulldogs since the 70-55 game last 2012.
