The FEU Tamaraws silenced the UST Growling Tigers with a resounding 62-67 victory at the MOA Arena last Wednesday, Dec. 2, ending their 9-year title drought in the UAAP Men’s basketball.
In the winner-take-all game 3 of the UAAP Season 78 Finals, Mark “Mac” Belo, hailed as the Finals MVP, spearheaded the high-spirited Tamaraws notching 23 points and 8 rebounds.

RR Pogoy contributed 14 points, 7 of which were from the 4th canto, and Mike Tolomia provided 13 markers, stretching the lead for the Tamaraws and clinching its 20th Men’s basketball championship.
With 6 of FEU’s key players leaving the collegiate basketball, Coach Nash Racela promised that the FEU Tamaraws are prepared for the next season.
Ed Daquioag, on the other hand, played his last season leading the Growling Tigers with 21 impressive points. However, his costly mistakes and turnovers in the 4th quarter widened the Tamaraws lead.
Karim Abdul and Kevin Ferrer, who suffered their 2nd championship loss in their UAAP career, contributed 12 and 6 points, respectively. Ferrer, dubbed as the King Tiger, was shut down by FEU’s defense in Game 3 as he shocked the Tamaraws last game with a career- high 29 points, 24 of which were from 3rd quarter alone.
Rookie Marvin Lee of the Tigers also stepped up on the game but fell short as he produced 9 points including a buzzer-beater 3 points that made the FEU lead within range, 46-51.
Both teams struggled in their respective offensive plays but higher rebounds percentage and strong defensive plans bought FEU their championship crown.
As Ferrer opened the game with a flaming trey, Abdul’s consecutive jumpers gave the upper hand to the Tigers with 15-9. FEU veterans Belo and Tolomia, however, cut the deficit to 1 after a 5-0 run as they end the 1st quarter.
The 3rd canto gave the Tamaraws a 5-point lead but the 4th quarter, after an 11-0 run, gave the lead to the Tigers with 57-51. However, Tamaraws who are eager to win this season and Pogoy’s aggressive plays in particular, led the counter attack that gave them the UAAP title.
