Gilas Pilipinas ensured their victory by pulling off a thrilling escape over a 13-point lead by New Zealand’s Wellington Saints, 84-81, last Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum during the 2015 Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) Cup.
New Zealand’s Wellington Saints were able to establish a strong game plan as they controlled the first three quarters, even forcing Gilas members to commit a couple of turnovers which opened up opportunities for fast breaks.

Wellington Saints’ Kevin Braswell, Ray Turner and Justin Edwards contributed 59 points combined while Terrence Romeo, Andray Blatche, Jayson Castro and Calvin Abueva answered the opponent’s team with fiery shots at the late 4th quarter to end the game with a victory.
The Philippine National team was behind by 11 points by the end of the 3rd quarter, 54-65. However, the 4th quarter witnessed a rejuvenated Terrence Romeo as the rising star of the new 12-man roster of Gilas, fired off a barrage of 3-pointers, which has put the team on the lead, 78-76, with 3:03 minutes remaining.
Sinking both free throws, Romeo sealed off the 4-team pocket tournament with 7.7 ticks remaining on the clock.
It is currently the second win of Gilas after their clash with Talk n Text during the opening day of the cup last Friday.
Gilas Pilipinas is currently taking the lead of the tourney with a 2-0 scorecard and is set to determine their final win-loss track as they face Chinese-Taipei on Sunday, September 13.
