Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamarraws stretched its win streak to 8 after edging out struggling University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons Wednesday during the second round of the UAAP Men’s Basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Roger Pogoy powered the Morayta-based squad with 17 points and four blocks, while Mac Belo and Mike Tolomia chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Paul Desiderio’s buzzer beater was responsible for the lead of the Maroons, 19-17, during the first quarter. The Tamarraws responded with 16-9 run to dominate the second canto with 33-28 card.
The host university kept their composure late in the game, enough to reduce the advantage of the other team to a three-point deficit, 43-40, to conclude the third quarter.
The Maroons almost had it during the final quarter after an Agustini Amar jumper put the team to a one-point deficit, 44-45, but the Tamarraws surged late during the final seven minutes of the game courtesy of back-to-back baskets by Raymar Jose and Pogoy, 51-44.
The Tamarraws continued to charge with baskets from Belo and Jose, which put them to a 63-46 lead with 3:55 to go.
Diego Darrio led UP with 16 points while Jett Manuel scored 11.
