The UST Growling Tigers made a daring escape over a 16-point lead by the ADMU Eagles to take the game 58-68 last Sept. 26, Saturday, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Kevin Ferrer powered up the Espana-based squad with 27 points and nine rebounds. Ed Dacquioag, meanwhile, finished with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal, followed by Marvin Lee with 8 points.
The Tigers dominated the first canto with a 12-9 scorecard, but the domination was later seized by the Eagles after exchange of shots were released which led to a 30-26 conclusion of the second quarter, leaving UST no more room for mistakes.
With 2:45 minutes left during the third frame, hopes for the Tigers to snatch a lead seem to dampen as the Eagles continue to outscore the white-and-yellow squad with a 16-point deficit.
The Tigers were able to continue to take charge as they wrapped up the third quarter with a 10-point outscore from the Eagles.
With Ferrer not letting this go, the Sinag Pilipinas national team member boosted up his team’s morale.
While establishing a tight defense and offense, Ferrer continued to fire barely-missing series of three-pointers as the Tigers bounced back during the fourth quarter which emerged a 32-6 run. It was a tie during the final 3 minutes of the game, 57 all.
UST already secured victory with just 1 minute to go but still continued to attack, concluding the game with a score of 68-58 courtesy of a lay-up by Jamill Sheriff and a pair of free throws by Ferrer.
Von Pessumal carried the Eagles with 19 points, while Keifer Ravena chipped in 13.
The team is now at a 4-1 scorecard behind prevailing FEU Tamarraws, and will clash with the DLSU Green Archers on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the same venue.
Meanwhile, the ADMU Eagles’ fate will be decided in the Battle of Katipunan versus the UP Fighting Maroons on the same day.
