A fired up Gilas Pilipinas bounced back from their previous 73-75 loss to Palestine on the opening day with a 101-50 sweep over Hong Kong, notching their first win in the 2015 FIBA Asia Cup in Changsha, China last Thursday, Sept. 24.
A renewed Gilas dominated Hong Kong as five of its members clinched a double-digit performance leading to a wide score gap as early as the first quarter. Jayson Castro, who led Gilas in its 2nd game, garnered a game-high 21 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. 5 out of his 6 attempts on the three-point lanes also hit the basket, proving his title as one of Asia’s top Point Guards.
Former NBA Center, Andray Blatche, also contributed 17 points and 8 rebounds. Dondon Hontiveros, who struggled in their Palestine game, pushed 4 out of 6 long range shots adding 14 markers to Gilas’ scoreboard combined with 8 rebounds. Gilas’ Ranidel de Ocampo produced 10 points and 7 rebounds while the rising star, Terrence Romeo chipped 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Hong Kong was led by Duncan Reid and Siu Wun Chang who scored 11 and 13 respectively but the rest of the members only made a single-digit performance.
Gilas started the game with a 12-0 run and ended the first quarter with a 13-point lead. The second to fourth quarter redefined the Gilas players’ offensive and defensive stance after giving 29, 45 and 51- point lead, respectively.
Gilas Pilipinas will cap its Group B game with Kuwait, who was drubbed by Hong Kong with 37 points, on Friday, Sept. 25.
